A formal rose garden in full bloom along a gravel path
Alliston · Barrie · Orangeville · Bolton

A garden you love, without giving up your weekends.

Birchwood Gardens Co. designs, plants and tends gardens for busy homeowners and second homes across South Simcoe and the Headwaters. You enjoy the garden. We do the kneeling.

Now booking a limited number of founding clients for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.

You bought the place for the view. Not the weeding.

Whether it is the home you reach on Friday nights or the one you leave every morning at seven, the garden always seems to need you exactly when you are not there. That is the gap we fill. One dedicated gardener who knows your property, your plants and your standards, on a schedule that never needs reminding.

What we do

Three services. One tidy garden, all year.

Take one, or let us handle the lot. Most clients start with a design and stay for the maintenance.

Garden design and planting

We measure your space, design it to scale, and show you the mature garden in 3D before a single shovel hits the ground. Then we supply and plant everything, properly spaced for what it becomes rather than what it looks like in the pot.

  • To-scale 2D plan and 3D preview
  • Itemized plant-by-plant quote
  • Ontario-hardy and native options

Ongoing maintenance

Scheduled visits on a rhythm that suits your garden: weeding, pruning, deadheading, edging, feeding, watering. You will see the difference, without ever having to make it.

  • Weekly, bi-weekly or monthly visits
  • Photo update after every visit
  • Ideal for owners who are away

Seasonal open and close

Spring opening: beds cleaned, mulch refreshed, pruning done before you have thought about it. Fall closing: perennials cut back, tender plants protected, everything tucked in for an Ontario winter.

  • Spring and fall packages
  • Storm and mid-season cleanups
  • Ready-for-the-weekend guarantee

A garden is never finished. It is tended, season after season, by someone who cares whether it thrives.

The Birchwood way
How it works

From first walk-through to a garden that runs itself.

Walk the property

A free, no-pressure visit. We measure, note the light and soil, and listen to how you actually want to use the space.

See it before we plant it

You get a to-scale plan and a 3D preview of the garden at maturity, plus an itemized quote. Every plant, every price, no vague allowances.

We plant it

Quality nursery stock, planted right and spaced for its full-grown size. No overcrowded beds that need ripping out in three years.

We keep it beautiful

Scheduled care visits with a photo update each time, so even from the city you know exactly how the garden looks today.

The Birchwood difference

Most gardeners sketch. We draw it to scale, then show you it in 3D.

Every design is built in our own planning studio with a database of over 800 Ontario-hardy species at their true mature sizes. The maple goes where its 14-metre canopy belongs. The hydrangeas are spaced for year five instead of day one. The quote is priced plant-by-plant from real nursery stock.

You approve the exact garden you will get. No surprises, horticultural or financial.

About us

The second Birchwood.

Birchwood Gardens Co. grows out of Birchwood Acres, our Alliston essential oil shop built on the same belief: natural products and honest prices, done properly or not at all.

We are a small, owner-run company by choice. The person who designs your garden is the person who plants it, and the person you text when the peonies flop. We keep our client list short so every property gets looked after like it is ours.

Every plan is drawn to scale, every quote is itemized, and every visit ends with photos in your inbox. That is the whole pitch: craft, transparency, and a garden that is thriving whether you are home or not.

Questions, answered

The things people ask before booking.

How much does a garden design cost?
The consultation and walk-through are free. Design fees depend on the size and complexity of the space, and are quoted up front before any work starts. Because every quote is itemized plant-by-plant with real nursery pricing, you can trim or upgrade line by line until the number suits you. No allowances, no mystery figures.
We are only at the property on weekends. Does that work?
That is exactly who we built this for. We schedule visits mid-week, send you photo updates after each one, and have the garden weekend-ready before you arrive. Many of our clients rarely see us. They just see the results.
Do you use plants that survive our winters?
Yes. Everything we plant is selected for hardiness zones 4 and 5, which covers the Alliston, Barrie and Orangeville area. Our design database tracks each plant's hardiness, mature size and light needs, and we are happy to lean into Ontario natives and pollinator-friendly planting if that is your style.
Can you take over a garden someone else designed?
Absolutely. Most maintenance clients come to us with an existing garden. We start with a cleanup-and-assessment visit, map what you have, and put it on a proper care schedule.
How small is too small a job?
If it is a garden and it matters to you, it is not too small. A single refreshed front bed is a fine place to start. Most of our bigger projects started exactly that way.
